Yellow Wasabi is an evolutionary biologist and new media artist based in Paris who has graduated from Paris-Saclay University with Master Neurosciences. She combines sciences and arts to investigate the human position in the digital industry and ecological landscape. She uses computer programs and biological modules to innovate Guzheng, which she has played since childhood; she shapes sound through AI motion capture and interactive projections. The noise of life is transformed into immaterial fossils of cognition that resonate with the audience's emotional experience, improvising collectively to create an inclusive space.

Yellow Wasabi is artist-in-residence at GRAME and GMEM (Centre national de création musicale), Artzoyd Studios, La Générale, Theatre in the Palm in Greece and Schoenberg Society in Estonia, funded by Creative Europe and Culture Moves Europe. She is active on experimental music stages, contemporary art spaces and scientific conferences in Europe and in Asia.

CLOSE ENCOUNTERS: Mathieu Sylvestre (FR)

Mathieu Sylvestres main sources of sound are field recordings and analog synthesizers. The natral sounds and noises are interwoven and articulated in electrified sound narratives between aural synaesthesia and spatial vibrations.

As an autodidact musician based in Berlin, Germany since 2010, Sylvestre first came from the France rock music scene to noise music after 10 years of being a vocalist and guitarist. With guitars, cello, effect pedals and contact microphones, he first experimented on sounds and noises to work on origin of vibrations by straight analog means. Following the guitar noise experiments he developed sound pieces from field recordings and Moog analog synthesizers sound sources.

After hundreds of shows in Europe and worldwide the works are constantly enriched by different contexts and places continuing to evolve show after show.

CLOSE ENCOUNTERS: Luurankouni - Félicie Bazelaire (FR) & Lauri Hyvärinen (FI)

LUURANKOUNI (‘skeleton dream’) is the duo of double bassist Félicie Bazelaire and electric guitarist Lauri Hyvärinen. Borrowed from a Finnish translation of poems by the 15th-century Japanese poet Ikkyū, the name reflects the duo’s desire to strip away the surface to reveal an essential form, in all its dread. Inspired by Ikkyū’s themes of mortality, impermanence, and sensuality, the duo’s work explores the fragile dualism between presence and absence in sound.

Influenced by the spirit of Wandelweiser, field-recordings and drone music, Bazelaire and Hyvärinen improvise within a tacitly defined space. They create a sober, minimalist music, within which a discourse is developed through the choice of timbres. The lightness of the guitar's harmonics contrasts with the grain of the bow on the double bass string.

The two musicians have researched the potential of their respective instruments thoroughly in a variety of experimental improvisational and compositional contexts, continuously collaborating and disseminating their work internationally. Their work has been presented by record labels such as Confront Recordings, Dinzu Artefacts, Edition Wandelweiser Records, Ftarri, Intonema, Hitorri and NUNC. Their collaborators include Clara de Asís, Angharad Davies, Léo Dupleix, Seijiro Murayama, Taku Sugimoto, Minami Saeki and Stefan Thut.

CLOSE ENCOUNTERS: overdriven dreams - Uroš Kostić (RS)

Uroš Kostić alias overdriven dreams is an ambient composer from Niš, Serbia, seeking to bring the infinite sound fields of phantasmagoric dreams to life. In the process, he relies primarily on experimentation in the field of post-minimalism, drone, and ambient by working with 4-track cassette tape loops, field recordings, and reel-to-reel tape loops. His pieces are characterized by deep ostinato lines and meandering lush textures permeated with string instruments, pianos, and choirs.

His first album “symphony // of // murmurings” was released by the Dutch label Slow Tone Collages in collaboration with one of the most prolific experimental artists Lawrence English as a mastering engineer. The second album was released in April 2024, "four trembles on an imagined occasion". It was a result of intensive exploration of sound and the tools used to create it (four- channel cassette loops, a sine wave generator, a handful of pedals, and various instruments with the aid of contact microphones).

Omni Selassi (CH/GER)

Somewhere by the sea, which spills between me and you, the old factory stands and rusts, as a disgrace, a disgrace to the harmony of sunset and spray and emptiness. Someone painted “Omni Selassi” on the wall of the building before disappearing forevermore and with him the language we spoke. We're left with two words and the drums, the stuff, the cables, the voice - to understand where we actually come from.

The three-piece Omni Selassi was brought together by Rea Dubach in 2019. In a flash of inspiration – for what hardly anyone would have expected at the time: since then, the band from Biel, Bern, and Leipzig with Rea Dubach (voc, git, efx), Mirko Schwab (dr, electroharp, git) and Lukas Rutzen (dr, perc, bass) has been chased from one stage to the next. Rarely does the same thing happen twice: Omni Selassi play on to musical doom. And nothing remains as it was: split and disassembled, symbiotic, androgynous, kaleidoscopically polytoxic. Two drummers meet a singer, a guitar and all kinds of other stuff, knickknacks, shenanigans. Pop, grunge, ritual, punk, never as dogma, always as an attempt at failing.

CLOSE ENCOUNTERS: Sopraterra - Magda Drozd & Nicola Genovese (CH)

Sopraterra, a music duo formed by Magda Drozd and Nicola Genovese, transforms the traditional timbres of the saxophone and violin into hauntingly eerie electronic soundscapes. Sopraterra is a sort of natural consequence of years of collaboration between Drozd and Genovese in the fields of music, performance and art. The name “Sopraterra” itself, translating to “above the earth” in Italian, evokes images of ancient ruins where only the upper parts remain visible, mirroring the duo’s exploration of sound landscapes that bridge the past and the future – a blend of antique melodies and obscure drones.

Sopraterra draws inspiration from an eclectic spectrum of influences, including the visionary sounds of Current 93, the intricate harmonies of late medieval Ars Nova, and the enchanting elegance of Baroque chamber music, Sopraterra also pays homage to the avant-garde experimentation of the legendary French collective Art Zoyd and the contemporary brilliance of nowadays composers like Kali Malone, Hüma Utku or Hiro Kone.

On their debut album Seven Dances to Embrace the Hollow released in February 2025 on Präsens Editionen – a label from Lucerne know for its experimental and state of the art projects and the publisher of Zweikommasieben music magazine, the Zurich-based artists offer exactly what’s announced: seven compositions which, as they unhurriedly flow into each other, mark potential entry points to discover what might be lying underneath. By choosing Sopraterra, which translates to “above the earth” in Italian, as their shared project’s name, Drozd and Genovese indicate their own position in this archeological-looking endeavor, hinting at the potential for sonic explorations to produce deeply submerged discoveries.

Young’s sounds and performances are the sputterings of refined dysfunction and eager uncertainty, coaxed from an improvised maze of crooked rhythms and tangled textures made from voice/body, synthesis, tapes, percussion, and the occasional whiff of physical comedy. Bromp Treb has many recordings in circulation and has performed at fancy-pants arts institutions and schools as well as countless basements, bars, lofts, living rooms, galleries and closets all around North America and Europe.

CLOSE ENCOUNTERS: Stevie Richards (AU) & Mike Meanstreetz (US) ALSO ENCOUNTERING: Villem Jahu

The Stevie Richards, Mike Meanstreetz Duo was formed in 2023 through a meeting of two kindred spirits who share a love of touring and playing wild, freewheeling experimental music. They play improvised sets using Extended Technique Sax, Video Synth, DIY Serge Analog Synth, Tapes/Effects and Drums and Percussion. Sets can be anywhere from quiet conversational, improvisations to full blown free noise blasts.

Stevie Richards is a DIY electronics and woodwind player and performer currently based in Naarm / Melbourne, Australia. Stevie has performed in Europe, United States, Mexico and Japan both as a soloist and through deliberate international collaboration, taking part in many past and ongoing ensembles worldwide playing noise, free jazz, ambient and electroacoustic music.

IG

Mike Meanstreetz is a Los Angeles based multimedia artist whose non-traditional craft seeds new genres while reaping the fallen fruit of old. Auditory, visual, and word rarely appear in the singular, most often materialising in a tangle of synaesthesia. Sonically his practice explores and expands upon both more metrical genre adjacent sensibilities and more fluid extended techniques via drum kit/percussion, musique concrete/electronic manipulation, and harmonically loaded acoustic-acoustic nylon MIDI triggered guitar. In these various modes he has performed throughout the US, Mexico, Canada and Europe.

IG

Villem Jahu is an interdiciplinary artist, free improviser, synthesist & cultural organizer. He works with abstract electronic sounds in the form of live performances, sound installations, sound design for exhibitions, dance pieces etc. In performing live, important aspects are total improvisation, close listening to other players and instruments, high dynamics, fun. Operating both as a solo artist and in collaboration with other musicians, dancers and visual artists, Jahu’s sound is strongly influenced by Musique Concrète, noise and lo-fi aesthetics, all that in playful free-improvisational mixture.

CLOSE ENCOUNTERS: Arttu Partinen (FI)

Arttu Partinen has performed solo under the moniker Amon Düde alias for around 15 years, recently often also under his own name. The apex of this process was, in a way, the split tape between Arttu Partinen and Amon Düde "Songs In The Attic / Live At Leeds". Partinen has been struggling to shake the stage persona, aiming to move towards a more autobiographical form of expression.

As sound sources, Partinen uses collapsing tape players, found tapes, his own recordings from several projects, nature sounds, human voice etc. Nowadays he also has a library of sounds by friends, which enables him to become the leader of a virtual band. The physicality of his performances makes him a kind of a full body theremin, as every vibration has an effect on the music. The same goes also the other way, as the sounds in turn guide the body movements. Operating with tapes, coincidence always has a huge role, making each concert an endlessly dividing entity.

Partinen is also one of the founding members of the beer trance / forest folk group Avarus that has done several extensive tours in Europe and US. In addition to solo gigs, Partinen has done duos with among others Sami Pekkola (Taco Bells, Jooklo Finnish Quintet) and Pekka Airaksinen. He is also part of Hockey Night with Pekkola, Jaakko Tolvi (Taco Bells, Kiila, Pymathon, Jarse..) and Jonna Karanka (Kuupuu, Olimpia Splendid), combining tape collages, sound effects, toys and free jazz. One of his earlier bands, Hetero Skeleton, that had a release on Load Records among others, is now on an indefinite hiatus.

Since 2020 he has been operating the ARTSY label, with releases by among others Kraus, Natalia Beylis, Marcia Bassett, Reynols etc.

SWEATMASTER // Garage Rock // Turku, Finland
In the summer of 1998, the trio Sweatmaster was formed in the Finnish coastal town of Turku. Drummer Matti Kallio and guitarist Mikko Luukko had been playing under this name for a while, but it only really worked with bassist and singer Sasu Mykkänen. The only task is to kick ass.

THE HIPPRIESTS // Garage Punk // Berlin
formed under the spell of Mark E.Smith in the late 80s this powerful Berlin based trio became the perpetuum mobile of Garage punk. Dedicated followers of fashion love them for their extraordinary taste of crossing language and dressing code borders. Firm believers of the strict punkrockcode embrace them for their simplicity in chordchanges.

“Untermarionette” PREMIERE

“Untermarionette” PREMIERE

“Untermarionette” is a slow, blunt dissection of the mainstream technological narrative, an acknowledgement of machine addiction and refusal of treatment, a non-verbal manifestation of posthumanist theatre, a voluntary deviation from the technological race, a technological anarchism, death and resurrection of the puppet theatre, renunciation of evolutionary and cultural advantages, opening of a portal to a parallel technological universe, crucifixion of the über-marionette, declaring fanatical progressivism a heresy and encounter with the unknown.

The project “Untermarionette” implements a method developed especially for object-theater by director Erik Alalooga during his doctoral studies. The great challenge of the method is to create a situation where the performer makes all the mechanical performance partners needed for the production. The method does not involve any technical crash course, but triggers, by means of attitudinal shaping and various tasks, the actor’s immediate capacity to the maximum extent possible without any specific training.

Machines that are not characterised by the quality requirements imposed by the mainstream progressive narrative (speed, precision, strength, and more recently also intelligence) voluntarily abandon the technological race. It is not a question of technical inadequacy of the machine-builders, but of technological anarchism. We are not preaching a radical technophobia that invites people to return to the Stone Age. Technology is clearly here to stay. The question is whether we can view it from an alternative and personal position. From a position free from the utopian-dystopian dilemma of striving to become a god at one end and fearing to end up in a slime bath generating electricity for an artificial brain at the other.

Machine-makers and perfomers – Karolin Poska ja Sigrid Savi

CLOSE ENCOUNTERS: Simon Whetham (UK) “Channelling”

Simon Whetham has been developing a practice of working with sonic activity as a raw material for creation since 2005. He uses environmental sound, employing a variety of methods and techniques to obtain often unnoticed and obscured sonic phenomena. When presenting work in a performance or installation, for him the space and the objects within become instruments to be played. Since 2018 he has been creating works that repurpose the mechanisms and moving parts of various pieces of obsolete consumer technology, combining and reconfiguring them to be presented as kinetic sound-making sculptural works.

“Channelling” is a kinetic sound performance project, in which a collection of motor devices salvaged from obsolete and discarded consumer technology is reanimated by environmental sound recordings. In turn, this produces new sounds from the devices, which are amplified using various microphones and techniques.
The recordings feature seemingly mundane sound phenomena that occur unpredictably and irregularly in everyday life – passing traffic, wind, doors closing – and also sounds of other machines malfunctioning. Because of this, the movement of the devices is random, variable, and autonomous. This means the relationship between performer and devices is a collaboration rather than a master and servant type situation.
“Channelling Reduction” follows the trend of technology to miniaturise as it evolves, becoming smaller and lighter, but more powerful.

Simon Whetham is also currently in residency at the Narva Art Residency

Post-Kalinin

At the beginning of 20th century a legendary revolutionary and upcoming formal chief of soviet union - Mihhail Kalinin hanged out in Tallinn. He worked in Volta factory, made evil plans and posed to photographers with industrial machines. His ghost has been seen in night-times haunting in old factory. Now is proper time to summon his spirit. We plan to do it loudly and at the epicenter of historical events. Welcome to the most underground space of Tallinn, of which most of you have never even hear about!

In post-revolution Russia sound experiments were honoured amongst commies. Trotsky supported avant garde. Lenin hated it and called the artists "bloody futurists". Can´t find the opinion of Kalinin, but who cares.
